Renewable energy installations conquer the ski world.

Lift operators make a commitment to climate protection with photovoltaic panels from ertex solar.
A relatively small, but very spectacular photovoltaic installation, with 5.5 kW, was constructed in 2009, 1620 m above sea-level, at Kronplatz in the South Tyrolean Dolomites. In the ski hut on the Piz de Plaies, a total of 40 modules in the form of differing shapes and dimensions, were installed. Since then, the installation has run smoothly, without problems, and supplies per year about the same level of power consumed by the ski hut.

Three years later in 2012, FMV, Illwerke and Doppelmayr realize for the first time a world first in the form of the "Hüttenkopf" 6-seater chairlift on the Golm mountain range, again with modules from ertex solar. In this instance the glazing was in an elegantly curved design, retro-fitting an existing installation, therefore, nothing is an obstacle. Depending on the length of the lift system, between one third and 50% of the total electricity demand of the cable car, can be covered by the solar energy captured.


In early December a further project, with an installation from ertex solar, was implemented. This project from Architekturbüro Hasenauer, Saalfelden, Austria, planned a timber-constructed station building for the Glocknerbahn in Zell am See, Austria, including 34 modules from ertex solar. One should, however, not be fooled by the small number of modules in terms of installed capacity, as with dimensions of approximately 3.2 x 1.5 m, the modules are around three times larger than commercial panels. On 165 m², 17 kWp were installed, which corresponds to the power demand of circa 5 households. For maximum energy yield – especially for Winter operation – the main body was designed by the Hasenauer architect office for optimal sun alignment.

Erich Egger, CEO of Schmittenhöhebahn AG, said in an interview with the Bezirksblatt Mittersill regional newspaper: “We see ourselves as a pioneer in the field of energy efficiency in tourism, so this project is a further logical investment in a sustainable future”.  He also points out that the company has chosen a building-integrated technology to be sensitive to the surroundings and not to harm the unique landscape.

Much respect is also due to the glass company of Tichy from Zell am See, who under extreme winter conditions, installed the modules shortly before start-up.
